A first class municipality, Dasmariñas was part of Imus until the year 1868, when it was converted into an independent municipality named Perez-Dasmariñas. then after nearly 37 years, Dasmariñas was again annexed to Imus, remaining a barrio of the latter until it regained its independence in 1917.
Historically, Dasmariñas was the gateway to the revolutionary capital of Imus. It was in Barrio Salitran, in a strategic pass known as Pasong Santol, Where Filipino volunteers under General Crispulo Aguinaldo held Spanish forces at bay until the defenders were wipe out almost to the last man.

Among the cities and municipalities of Cavite, Dasmariñas is considered the richest, with the biggest population. Its growth as an urban center vies with that of larger cities in the province, offering well-developed infrastructure and mall giants such as SM City and Robinsons Place.
Institutional landmarks in the area include the De La Salle University, Museo De La Salle and the Dasmariñas Business Technopark.
